This video was recorded in 1989. St. Louis Missouri. A self-help group for the children of Vietnam veterans. They got a chance to speak with one another and my team was fortunate enough to be there to record this poem written and spoken by one of the attendees. I found that groups like this across the country were extraordinarily helpful as these young people could identify with each other stories in profound ways. I also found that their challenges were unique and they felt if you weren't “one of them” you couldn't understand what they had witnessed as they grew up.

As my subscribers know, this clip is A portion of an interview I did with one of the people in my television series on the 1960s. It was made in 1989. The gentleman lived the life of an innocent young boy, a political radical, a hippie, a dropout, and more...... and now runs a successful business making guitars and other musical instruments. This documentary was paid for by the United States government in the 1930s. I am impressed by the script and kept it in my collection for that reason. The Great Depression. A miserable time for most Americans. Roosevelt's inaugural speech was particularly powerful in light of how Americans felt lost and needed something substantial to uplift them. As a young documentary filmmaker I studied older documentaries like this to get a sense of the power of script to lead the development of a story.
