Bascom Lamar Lunsford founded the first Bluegrass/Country Music/Mountain Music Festival in 1929 in Asheville North Carolina. Back in 1965, I was making my first major documentary and I got the opportunity to spend 6 weeks with him and his wife Freda driving around the mountain peaks and valleys mostly in Madison County North Carolina. I saw people who had deep & sophisticated appreciation for and an ability to perform mountain music, songs, clog dancing, storytelling and more. The camera weighed 49 pounds, the audio recorder 27 pounds. I had never used a pro camera before but I had come to record something that I loved since listening on the radio as a boy on Long Island New York. I witnessed it now being performed with such incredible skill and right front of my eyes (and camera). My film is now a classic, not only for the music and the dance but the informal and yet quite formal ways these people had of speaking to one another. Unique American history.

With this clip, I decided to respond to the battle going on between the generations which is so evident in the comments on my channel. So many blame the baby boomers for our current state of affairs (which they don't like) while others blame the millennials. Yet we all know that parents are to a great extent responsible for the actions and attitudes of the children. This clip presents portions of my 6 part TV series titled Making Sense Of The Sixties where, in 1989, I asked parents of those who grew up in the 1960s about how they raise their children.

I interviewed her in 1989 as part of my PBS television series on the 1960s. She is a professor of religion at the University of Florida. I liked this interview because she gives a sense of the beautiful idealistic innocence of those who wanted to improve civil rights, especially those who participated in the famous Mississippi Freedom Summer. As part of the Freedom Summer, Simmons helped build freedom schools and libraries in black communities in Mississippi

I did this interview with him in 1989. He comes from Kansas City. He was a journalist at the Washington Post and the New York Times for many years and also did work on NPR. In 1973, he won a Pulitzer Prize. I picked him for my TV series because of his clearly outspoken points of view and storytelling style.
